Ignacio Briones Rojas


Mr. Ignacio Briones Rojas is the Minister of Finance of the Government of Chile under the administration of President Sebastián Piñera.

Ignacio Briones holds an BA in Economics as well as Master in Economics and Political Science from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and PhD in Economics from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Sciences-po in Paris, France.

He assumed the position of Minister of Finance of Chile on October 28, 2019.

Until his appointment, he served as Dean of the School of Government of the Adolfo Ibáñez University, a position he held since June 2014.

Between 2013 and 2014, he was a Chilean ambassador to the OECD.

Between March 2010 and July 2013, he served as International Finance Coordinator of the Ministry of Finance of Chile.

He has developed a long career as a professor and researcher at the School of Business (2004-2006) and the School of Government (2007-2010) of the Adolfo Ibáñez University. He has publish more than 10 papers in prestigious international academic journals and 7 working papers, some of which have been published by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). His research areas are Political Economy, Economic and Financial History.

In 2012, he founded the Center for Horizontal Studies and is a founding member of the Chilean Public Policy Society.

In the past, he has been a consultant to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, among other organizations.

In addition, he has been director of companies at AFP Capital (alternate director between June and August 2016) and Abastible (director between 2015- October 2019). In terms of public companies, his participation as director of the National Copper Corporation (Codelco) stands out, a position he held from May 11, 2018 until his appointment as Minister of Finance.
